🌈 Classic Colour Combinations for Your Colour Season

🌈 Classic Colour Combinations for Your Colour Season

So you know your colour season... but what do you do now? Some people hate the 'pastel', 'gothic' or 'earthy' feel of their season, but what if I told you all of the seasons can be classic?

🎨 12 classic colour combinations based on your season

🍓 How to find your best neutrals | David Zyla’s True Colours

☀️ Lookbook: 4 outfits for your colour season

🌈 Q&A: are all the colours in your season suitable for you?

12 classic colour combinations for your season

For each of the four main season categories, I have put together three potential colour combination palettes for you to try out. Use these combinations to create outfit templates you can return to, try swapping the colours between top, bottom and accessories. For example, perhaps you have your head-to-toe as one colour, with your bag as the second and your shoes as the third, or your top one colour, your trousers another and your accessories the third.

I have focused on each palette being “classic” or “timeless”. In this context, this means neutral, subtle and effortless. These palettes largely won’t be bold or unexpected, but rather palettes that anyone might try as a base for your wardrobe.

☀️ Summer

Summers are cool, soft and light. Their best neutrals tend to be ashy or have a pinkish lean.

  1. dusty blue + off white + cool brown

  2. nude pink + grey + silver

  3. cool brown + denim + chocolate brown

🍂 Autumn

Autumns are warm, soft and dark. Their best neutrals tend to be earthy, rich and have a reddish feel.

  1. maroon + olive + tan

  2. rust brown + soft peach + gold

  3. mustard + teal + cream

❄️ Winter

Winters are cool, bright and dark. Their best neutrals tend to be jewel toned, high contrast and blue-ish

  1. black + white + brick red

  2. burgundy + charcoal grey + silver

  3. navy + pale pink + chocolate brown

🌷 Spring

Springs are warm, bright and light. Their best neutrals tend to be vibrant and airy

  1. vanilla + peach + gold

  2. camel + mustard + denim

  3. teal + light copper + sky blue

How to find your best neutrals? | David Zyla’s True Colours

My favourite system for finding your best colours is without a doubt the method laid out in David Zyla’s Color Your Style. In Zyla’s system, you examine your features (hair, skin and eyes) to pull the most interesting colours from your face to use in your wardrobe

Essence colour

Your intimate, vulnerable, “open” colour. This is a representation of your skin colour, mine is dusty rose

Romantic colour

Your sensual, passionate colour. Pinch your forefinger and identify the colour which appears. Mine is raspberry

Dramatic colour

Your bold, impactful, strong colour. This colour is pulled from your veins. Mine is lavender

Energy colour

Your comfort, support colour for when you are facing emotionally challenging scenarios. To find this colour you pull from the darkest colour in your eye. Mine is denim

Tranquil colour

Your relaxed, calming colour for when you want to feel rested and peaceful. This is the lightest colour in your eye, mine is moon green

Your three bases

These are your three best neutrals to pair with your other colours

  1. Your formal, powerful neutral (version of/instead of black). Use the colour of the ring around your iris. Mine is payne’s grey

  2. Your warmer, less formal neutral (version of/instead of brown). Find the darkest colour of your natural hair. Mine is mushroom

  3. Your casual, playful neutral. Find the lightest colour of your natural hair. Mine is pearl
