Dark Winter | the moody, smoky colour season
Key words
One of my favourite exercises to help you understand the colour seasons is to use defining words. My perspective on the seasons is to see them as groups of colours which work in harmony together, as opposed to a collection of extremely specific shades. Essentially, it’s all about the vibe.

Are You A Dark Winter?
Dark winter key features:
1. Dark
Dark is their most dominant feature. This means when you look at their overall appearance their depth is what will strike you first
2. Cool
They are cool second, which means they lean cool but it isn’t their dominant characteristic. In other words, they lean more neutral than a true winter for example
3. Bright
Being in the winter family, they are classed as bright; however, they are more medium brightness with medium contrast. They tend to have a smoky, yet intense feel.
Typical features:
Hair
black
dark brown
medium brown
Eyes
black
deep brown
chocolate brown
medium brown
dark hazel
deep blue/green
Skin
ashy pale
mushroom
cool beige
deep brown
Closest seasons:
Dark Autumn
Dark Autumns can be very similar in both depth and level of brightness, and as both can be close to neutral it can be really hard to tell them apart! A good hint is that dark autumns tend to have a ‘burnt’ appearance, with a touch of brownish-red to their hair and eyes with gold in their skin.
Bright Winter
Bright winters can also have very dark eyes and hair just like a dark winter, and both are cool-neutral in tone. However, bright winter tends to have much lighter/darker skin creating higher contrast between the hair, skin and eyes. Where dark winters typically will have hair and/or eyes which are deep brown, bright winters hair and/or eyes might be very close to black if they are brown rather than blue.
True Winter
True winters are next to dark winters on the colour season wheel and when they have brown eyes they can appear quite similar to dark winters. True winters; however, are much closer to summers with a lighter, clearer appearance which is less ‘smoky’.
Soft Summer
Soft summer is surprisingly close to dark winter as this season is soft, cool, and deep. So they can appear similar in depth and cool tones to a dark winter. They can share the smokiness and ashy undertone of this type; however, this type tends to have lighter eyes especially and more medium hair with an ashy undertone.
