How to change your style when you change your mind
I have been through various changes with my style over the last three years since starting my channel. Whether it was moving from a theatrical romantic to soft classic, my style roots from sun to fire to earth (maybe now mountain), from light summer to true summer, I have always been happy with letting my style shift as I learn more. I really dislike the mindset that prevails of âyou were WRONGâ - I just really donât think that way. I think as we gain new information, itâs good to change our minds. For instance, I have recently had a whole new âclickâ that the tone is just as important with what differentiates colour seasons as the level of brightness , which I always viewed as a secondary factor. This has led me to be much more interested in exploring soft summer for myself. I think some would see this as a failure, but I see it as a win to have learned a new piece of puzzle.
I get a lot of people saying in the comments âget an in person colour analysis doneâ - and I may do at some point as itâs always interesting and fun to have an experience like that. However, my prevailing feeling is that there is not necessarily a truth that a different analyst can tell me. I think we forget that stylists are trained in different systems, trained under other humans who also have their own perspective, and they have their own view of the world. Iâm not saying colour analysis is wholly subjective, but that individuals will always be affected by their unique experience, and so your colour season journey canât really stop just because you have one external opinion. I have people who disagree with my analyses sometimes, because they have their own idea about what they feel that colour season means, and I always say that I can give my opinion and advice, but you have to do what feels good for you at the end of the day. In this scenario, I will share whatever information they want for the season they believe they are in addition to my original recommendation. Essentially, I feel that asking someone else for their opinion wouldnât necessarily bring me any greater clarity than taking the time to fully understand my features and the colour seasons myself.
So, what do you do if you have had your mind blown and you realise that one of your original thoughts isnât right for you anymore?
Try journalling your thoughts about this style element.
You will find that you may have some hang ups around this style element that were holding you back from embracing it before. For instance, the soft summer palette was always my favourite so I almost felt that it therefore couldnât be my season (??). In fact, this is the season I now feel my features most closely resemble.
Similarly, you might find that you have ideas about your personality which are influencing your idea of your essences, whilst actually ignoring some fundamental parts of your bone structure that you just couldnât see.
You should also check some of your old photos to check your conclusions. For example, I always thought being a brunette just didnât work for me because when I looked at the pictures where I had brown hair I always looked terrible. However, what I didnât take into account was the shade of brown, the fact that I wasnât wearing my best colours, my makeup shades were off, my hair style wasnât right for me - the fact that I was brunette was actually not the problem at all.
Sit down with a pen and paper, and write down your thoughts about this new style element you are exploring. What do you think or feel about it? Why havenât you considered it before? Are those thoughts valid or not
First and foremost, see it as an opportunity.
This is your chance to do a really good deep dive into this new style element you have discovered. Perhaps you have some negative feelings about this new aesthetic, or the fact that you have to change your style. You can really have fun exploring this whole new world of personal style that used to be off limits for you.
Go through your photos of yourself
Try to see where you may have incorporated this style element before. If itâs a colour season, see where you have worn one of the colours in the palette.
Recreate celebrity outfits
Your style muses you used to rely on might not necessarily be your best fit anymore now that you have uncovered this new aspect of your style. Take some time to find new style muses, and find outfits that you like. Ask yourself what it is you like about them, and see if you can capture that in an outfit. Remember to focus on the element you are thinking about - if you are focusing on colour, look at the colours they pair together, how they incorporate those colours in print, what colours they avoid, how they pair this element with their other features.
Take pictures everyday
This is definitely one I am doing currently. Take pictures of yourself and your clothes at every opportunity you can. Since dyeing my hair darker, I am regularly thinking about the colour choices I have made and if they work. I am no longer leaving these sorts of things to luck - I want to be fully engaged in the learning process and that also means recording the changes made.
Start with your hair and makeup
The most important part of any outfit is your hair and makeup. People look to your face first, and these are the grounding fires for your whole look. Before you even think about buying a new top, try and work out what you are going to do for your everyday makeup look and hair do to match your new style element
Create a wardrobe edit
You donât necessarily need to throw out half your wardrobe - although a wardrobe clear out can feel refreshing. If you find that intimidating, challenge yourself to select around 10 pieces in your existing wardrobe which somewhat works for this new style element you have discovered. For example, if you have just shifted your season, see if you own anything which would still work.
Ultimately, try to see the change as an opportunity for fun
